Fans - 6 October 2007
My dear friends
Granted, I am not a big soccer fan but some
developments in that world catch my attention.
It has been said that all political careers end
in tears. Well, that sounds like an exaggerated sweeping statement but there is some grain
of truth in it. It would appear to me that most soccer coaching careers end in tears.
In the last football season one of the top clubs
with an illustrious record in South Africa's Premier Soccer League frustrated its
fans with a series of bad play. Some regarded it as a sinking ship. Then the directors
hired a new coach who turned things around. Such was his success that he was nicknamed
'Save The Ship.' The fans cheered ecstatically.
In this new season the club has got off to a bad
start. The fans are furious. Last week 'Save The Ship' had to jump of the ship, citing
fearing for his life. Indeed, after one of the last losses the police had to whisk him
away from angry fans who wanted to tear him apart.
These events reminded me of the song,
"In times like these
you need an anchor."
Anchoring your life on fans is a fatal mistake.
What we need for an anchor for these times and into eternity is the Eternal Rock. As the
song testifies,
Have a blessed weekend.
Pressing on!
In His love
Fano Sibisi
