Sunday School - 24 September
2007
My dear friends
South African politicians can be very interesting
- and disappointing. In spite of the fact that most of them are responsible for the
new dispensation's secular constitution, from the African Christian Democratic Party (a
small party with a strong voice on moral issues) to the South African Communist Party,
religious language flows freely in parliament; albeit sometimes with carelessness that
amounts to blasphemy.
We have just come out of a bruising 15-day period
where the Floor-crossing Act authorises politicians at national, provincial and local
level to move over to another party without losing their seats. There is widespread
criticism that this act legalises betrayal of colleagues and voters. As you can imagine,
during this period some parties gain at the expense of others.
Recently, a leading politician from one
party could not hold his excitement as he saw their numbers being boosted by walk-overs.
He could already see how they were poised to take over some municipalities. He boasted of
how the 'Sunday school,' the rule by other parties, would now give way to the 'main church
service,' the rule by his party.
By the way, in South Africa Sunday school is
regarded as something for children only. It was during a visit to the USA that I realised
that there is Sunday school for adults too.
In the middle of my amusement about the Sunday
school story a thought crossed my mind. One day, it might be during a serious
parliamentary session, Christ the King of king and Lord of lords will return in His
might and glory. When He comes, He will call off our politician's 'Sunday school' and His
'main church service' will begin. That will be no laughing matter.
"And then shall appear the
sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and
they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great
glory." (Matthew 24:30)
Have a blessed week.
Pressing on!
In His love
Fano Sibisi
