My dear friends
The devastation that accompanied Hurricane Katrina had
catastrophic results for the Gulf Coast and affected at least 3 states of the USA. The
main focus is on the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas. Most probably, numerous
books will be written about victims of the floods but so far two stand out for me.
One man was asked why he did not heed the warning to leave
his home to escape the impending disaster. His honest answer was that he did not think it
would be that serious. The next question was if he knew then what he knows now would he
have fled. His answer was "Definitely!"
How can I forget the voice of the man who seemed to be in
tears as he lamented the fact that at 62 years he had lost everything he had acquired in
life. He asked himself how on earth he could ever turn the clock back. And then came the
desperate cry which he repeated a few times, "Where do I go from here?"
For sure, the people in this misery need urgent practical
assistance but some eternal truths shine through the darkness of their loss. God's Word
has serious warnings that pertain to impending perils in this world and the one to come.
It also maps out clearly the way of escape for those who will obey the instructions but
the choice is ours. However, the consequences of our choices are not in our hands.
The 62 year man's complete loss of material possessions; is
that not the reality every mortal faces at death? All is lost except our investments
beyond the sunset.
"Though the fig-tree does not bud and
there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no
food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Saviour.
The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me
to go on the heights." (Habakkuk 3:17-19)
Have a blessed week.
Pressing on!
In His love
