INTERNATIONAL LIFE CHAIN ACTION - DURBAN
Thousands of people heard the pro-life message on International Life Chain Day, 6
October.
Together with several churches and organizations, CFT planned an open-air program in
Durban for 5 October. About 5,000 info pamphlets advertising the event had been handed out
the day before.
The main aim of the Life Chain action was to remind people of the value of the unborn
child. Although the South African law has legalised abortion, it is still murder in God's
eyes.
We chose The Workshop as venue, a crowded place where many people, both young
and old, go to shop or eat out. More than 200 pro-lifers held placards saying:
"Abortion Kills Babies", silently lining the street and park. Others handed out
tracts and info leaflets with the purpose of making contact.
With the assistance of Radio Khwezi, CFT set up a 'mock' radio (Radio Life) from where we
broadcasted messages and news bulletins informing people of the dangers of abortion.
Speakers from different churches shared messages of hope. Adverts of different
organisations such as 11th Hour Counseling, True Love Waits, Doctors for Life and Souls
Outreach could also be heard on Radio Life. Pastor Alvis of Souls Outreach gave a Gospel
message and made an altar call. Later on Rev Joyce Adams, an American lady also gave a
message from the Word of God. There was an encouraging response.
On the whole it was a very successful campaign. We should not grow weary of sending out
this message. As children of God it is our duty to constantly show the way. The next
pro-life action in which CFT will be involved is Sanctity Life Sunday on 2 February 2003.
We will be remembering the approximately 270 000 South African babies who have been
aborted since the legalisation of abortion on demand in South Africa on 1 February 1997.
"Speak up and judge fairly; Defend the rights of the poor and needy" Prov.31:9.
TRUE LOVE WAITS UPDATE
True Love Waits (TLW) has printed out and now sent abstinence posters to all the high
schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The task itself was monumental, requiring volunteers to package
a forwarding letter as well, in about 1 800 posters to be sent. We trust that the posters
will reach the schools and be put up for World Aids Day on 1 December.
True Love Waits is also planning on releasing a TLW radio advertisement as well as a press
statement for the day. During the festive season ahead, TLW will be planning and charging
up for 2003.
Another highlight was a TLW outreach to Calvinia in the Northern Cape, where the message
of purity was spread on their local radio station, schools, churches and church cell
groups.
COURT GIVES BROTHELS RED LIGHT
The Constitutional Court has declared both prostitution and the owning of a brothel
illegal. In a narrow decision against the legalisation of prostitution, six of the 11
judges found in favour of declaring sex for reward unconstitutional. Thus last year's
Johannesburg High Court ruling that removed a ban on receiving money in exchange for sex,
was dismissed. It also upheld the high court's ruling that owning a brothel is
unconstitutional. (SABC News, 9 October)
However, there are already attempts to put pressure on parliament to change the law.
Doctors committed to help enslaved women
Doctors For Life International (DFL) has expressed their delight with the judgement of
the South African Constitutional Court to declare prostitution illegal. Since 1996 when
this case started in the lower courts, DFL has been involved as a witness for the state.
In the judgement of the final case before the Constitutional Court, excerpts from DFL's
affidavit were quoted.
The evidence DFL presented to the court showed clearly that prostitution in itself is
degrading to women and is conducive to violent abuse of prostitutes both by customers and
pimps.
Further evidence was given about prostitution encouraging international trafficking in
women; leading to child prostitution; carrying an intensified risk of the spread of
sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV/AIDS; it's connections with high degrees of
drug abuse and crimes such as assault, rape and even murder; and it being a cause of
public nuisance.
DFL has stated that it remains committed to do everything in its power to continue to
attend to the plight of women caught in the modern day slavery of prostitution. These
women are to be assisted in developing skills and getting alternative occupation. For this
purpose a help-line can be called: 073 - 224 9221.
PYRAMID SCHEMES AND MULTILEVEL MARKETING
(By Linda Magqabi, continued from the November/December 2002 edition)
What is Multilevel-Marketing (MLM)?
Multilevel marketing is also known as direct marketing
or network marketing. A MLM company is legal because it is one of the ways to sell its
products. It is when the emphasis is on recruiting new distributors that the MLM company
turns into a pyramid. The structure of the organisation then takes the shape of a pyramid.
The problem of how such a structure grows has already been pointed out. Usually nobody in
a such a MLM company pays any attention to that fact. The uncontrolled recruiting of
distributors lead to another problem - that of oversupply.
Any business must carefully consider supply and demand. Management of supply and demand is
crucial to any business for any product or service. With any product there is a saturation
point, i.e. where there is an oversupply of a particular type of product. As the supply of
a particular product increases, the demand for it decreases. There is a complex
relationship between these and the sales price of the product as indicated by this graph:
With no control over the number of distributors, saturation of the market can easily be
reached with no one noticing or worse, not wanting to notice!
Warning!
Be very careful when:
- you are promised that you will get rich quickly.
- you are told "Everyone will want to buy this product!"
- the product's price is unreasonably high.
- dissatisfaction with your current situation is promoted.
- the person recruiting you keeps some of the facts from you.
- the person recruiting you puts pressure on you to join immediately.
- the emphasis is on the recruitment of other distributors.
Conclusion
Allow me to make a few concluding comments. God's Word says that we have to be alert
and watchful in all things. Those in the ministry should be extra careful that nothing
quenches their zeal for the gospel. Be aware that Network Marketing requires extraordinary
time commitment and can easily distract a person from his spiritual goal. Place your trust
and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ and not in people or money. Do not hesitate to ask for
help if there is anything that you are unsure of or don't understand. In Zulu they say
"Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili!", which means that the way is asked of those who
have gone ahead. Finally, a wise statement by a man of God as food for thought:
"The bait is not put into the trap to feed the mouse but to catch him."
- Spurgeon
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT BE READY
"Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." Matt 24:42
The 24th chapter of Matthew has "sunk" many Christians
who have dabbled in predictions and dates about end times. Verses from the books of Daniel
and Revelations are used to calculate how God must work in the last days. One ministry has
gone so far as declaring the "church age" to be over.
The obvious message from Matthew 24 is to "be
ready." It is variously translated as "be on your guard" and "be
watchful." We are to be ready for the Lords return, whether it means His
literal second coming or His taking us by means of death. A watchful Christian is actively
serving His Lord and others while He awaits Christs return (vs 45). Our Lord gives
an example of the unwatchful servant (vs 48 51) who, instead of being ready at all
times, reckons that His Lord is delayed and then proceeds to beat up his fellow servants
and become a partner in sin. So, disobedience to the command "be ready" results
in gossiping and lashing out at fellow servants. Sound familiar?
People in this world go to great lengths to be ready. It was recently reported that an
eccentric Frenchman who goes by the name of "Crazy Eric" has entered the record
books for the unusual feat of carrying more than 1,000 useful objects, permanently, about
his body. He was dubbed the human Swiss Army Knife, and has made it to the Guinness Book
of Records. "Crazy Eric" is ready for anything, but most probably not for what
is most important, his end, or the coming of Jesus.
What about you, are you ready for Christs return?
TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR SA CHRISTIAN LEADER
The passing away of Dr Ed Cain, editor of Signposts, was mourned by friends across the
world. Dr Cain, who was buried on 13 November in Pretoria, had produced many seminal
research papers on the need for Biblical democracy and had been a world leader in exposing
the error of liberation theology. Tributes from Christian leaders in South African and
overseas were read at the funeral.
In its tribute CFT President Fano Sibisi said: "Dr Cain. We just called him Ed. The
verses that came to my mind as I thought of him were, 'Who then is a faithful and wise
servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due
season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.'
(Matthew 24:45-46) For years Ed has served us with his special analytical skills. His
interpretation of current events and issues in the light of Biblical principles has
profited many.
Apart from hearing him at conferences, we would sometimes visit him, Deana his wife, and
Miriam his daughter at home just to sound him on different issues. It was a treat to see
him like a skilled surgeon dissects whatever topic you gave him. In all these years that
we knew him we found him to be steadfast and unshakeable. Such a man of God leaves behind
a big gap."
