CFT Press Statement
CFT RESPONSE TO CONSTITUTIONAL
COURT RULING ON GAY MARRIAGE
Parliament needs to carefully consider the meaning of marriage. Marriage throughout the
history of all civilisations has always meant to be between a man and a
woman. There is no tracable history for approved same-sex marriage in any
civilisation since the dawn of time. All major religions and even pagan societies
have underwritten this very obvious principle that marriage is meant to
signify a particular relationship between a man and a woman only.
The Marriage Act does not need to be changed. Todays Constitutional Court ruling
gives Parliament 12 months to look into the issue that
current legislation and common-law unfairly discriminates against same sex
couples. If it is really necessary, Parliament may need to have an additional act
for Civil Unions. But, marriage is what it says it is and it would be
dangerous to fiddle with its fundamental meaning. Parliamentarians will need to listen to
common sense and the obvious wish of South Africans, which is to keep the integrity of
marriage as being between a man and a woman.
The fact that the Constitutional Court
has approved same-sex unions does not change God's disapproval of homosexual conduct. God
in His Word, the Bible, makes no provision for same-sex unions. Christian church
denominations will have to make this very clear to parliamentarians and legislators. All
Christian church denominations need now to unite and protect the integrity and meaning of
"marriage".
