One of the most urgent and important issues confronting the church today is the right to life of the pre-born babies. Thousands of babies are killed annually by KZN abortionists, and a powerful life chain always offers strong encouragement and hope for reducing that number.
International Life Chain Sunday 2006 was held at KwaDukuza, Tongaat and Durban on 30 Sept and 1 Oct 2006. This prayerful witness was also held internationally providing a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian communities that abortion is grievously wrong and that the church Christ founded opposes the unmerciful killing of the pre-born babies. Those present held placards that read “abortion kills babies”, “abortion hurts women”, “one murdered, one wounded”, while standing 5 meters apart.
At the KwaDukuza life chain pastor BD Saul, of the Assemblies of God, challenged the local churches to make it an urgent priority to expose, oppose and end this war against children made in the image of God. Pastor Vani Komal of the Baptist Faith Centre and Mrs Sheila Arumugam of KwaDukuza played a very important role in organising the KwaDukuza Life Chain. The public displayed a very positive reaction at these life chains.
Bruno Hlongwane from Christians for Truth stated, “even though the government has passed the bill, which makes it legal to abort, we still want to remind our people that abortion is killing innocent babies and those who do it actually commit murder”.
According to one of the organisers, Sheila Arumugam, the event was prompted by the victory of Doctors for Life, a Non-Profit Governmental Organisation (NGO) which took the government to court, challenging the constitutionality of the bill, legalising abortion.
The bill was subsequently retracted in August this year, forcing the government to put the bill to vote, over 18 months.
“This was the first leg of mass demonstrations and campaigns to raise awareness among the public. In February we will repeat the same, where we will be handing over a petition to the authorities”, Arumugam said.
Diana Rauschenbaum, Life Child Project coordinator at Doctors for Life in Zimbali, said the event was also in commemoration of the Sanctity Life Sunday (first Sunday of October). The demonstration was in solidarity with all the children who have been aborted since 1991 when the legislation was passed.
